DURHAM, N.H.—The University of New Hampshire says it's time to start planning for the demise of the school's historic outdoor swimming pool.

The poll was built in 1938 through the Works Project Administration and has been a fixture in the Durham community for many years. University officials say they have been hearing from residents who oppose plans to renovate or remove it, but it can't remain as is for long.

The pool doesn't meet modern health or safety standards for water circulation, filtration or basic construction, and the depth and darkness of the water at certain locations makes it difficult for lifeguards to view the pool bottom clearly.

The university is proposing a task force to include campus and town representatives to study what to do with the pool.
