CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire residents are being reminded to dial before they dig to avoid hitting power and water lines.

Unitil and other utility companies are using today's date of Aug. 11 -- or 8/11 -- to remind homeowners to dial 811 at least three days before excavation projects large or small.

Callers to 811 will be able to arrange for professional locators to come to their house free of charge and mark where power and water lines run. Homeowners need to mark the intended dig site or route with white paint.

Those who plan to dig should dial 811 three days before excavation to allow locators time to visit and mark lines.

Utility companies will also be using colored lines on streets to mark underground lines and pipes.
