Why should voters even want a Democrat for governor?

FOR 16 YEARS Massachusetts voters have chosen Republican governors at the same time the Legislature remains overwhelmingly Democratic.

For better or worse, the voters seem to like the idea of divided government.

This raises an unspoken question in the primary Sept. 19: Why should voters want any Democrat in the corner office?

In recent interviews with the Globe editorial board, the three Democratic gubernatorial candidates offered the following replies.
