Did Billy Shaheen resign or was he fired?
Hillary Clinton contradicted her campaign's line about what how the campaign's relationship with Bill Shaheen ended last week.
Shaheen, of course, is the husband of former Governor Jeanne Shaheen, who was Clinton's New Hamphire campaign co-chair. Last week he told the Washington Post that Republicans would have a field day with Barack Obama over his admitted drug use 20 years ago if he were to become the Democratic nominee.
When it all went down, Clinton's pollster and adviser Mark Penn said on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews that Shaheen had resigned and a press release issued by the campaign said the same thing.
The issue of Shaheen's comments were brought up again on MSNBC this morning in an interview with Clinton herself. She said the campaign let Shaheen go not the other way around.
"That was totally a surprise," Clinton said about Shaheen's remarks. "It was not authorized. I certainly don't condone it. We asked him to step down. He's not part of our campaign."
The Clinton campaign has not commented today further to clear things up.
