Governor Lincoln Chafee was greeted with a protest about a plan to start collecting tolls on the new Sakonnet River Bridge as he appeared in Portsmouth to speak with local business owners. On Thursday, Chafee met with business owners at Portsmouth Town Hall. WPRI reported that a crowd, some carrying signs, met him there and said small business owners would suffer from the toll. The bridge is one of three off Aquidneck Island, and the Pell Bridge already collects a toll. Chafee told the crowd that ‘‘all of us got burned by not maintaining the Sakonnet bridge.’’ The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority has said that the toll is on track to start in June. end of story marker
