A former Rhode Island police chief has been sentenced to serve six months in prison for stealing $714 from a stripper’s pocketbook following a chase. Superior Court Judge Daniel A. Procaccini sentenced former Colonel John Whiting of the North Providence police to five years in prison Friday, but suspended 4½ years of it. He also stayed the sentence while Whiting appeals. Whiting was convicted in July on charges including larceny over $500. Prosecutors said Whiting tried to pull over the car the stripper was in after someone inside allegedly threw something at his vehicle. Prosecutors said he rifled through the woman’s car and purse after she fled from him.
