Immigration lawyers and agencies say more than 200 undocumented young Rhode Islanders have applied to stay in the United States under an Obama administration program. The Providence Journal reported that Providence lawyer David L. Yavner said he has handled 20 to 30 applications so far, from Pakistan, India, Cape Verde, Central America, and elsewhere. He has turned some people away. President Obama issued a directive in June that immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children can be exempted from deportation and granted work permits if they apply. end of story marker
