A new ad in Rhode Island’s First District congressional race is targeting US Representative David Cicilline’s comments about Providence’s financial health at the end of his tenure as mayor. The campaign advertisement from Republican challenger Brendan Doherty accuses Cicilline of covering up Providence’s financial problems during the 2010 congressional race when he said he was leaving the city in ‘‘excellent’’ financial condition. Following Cicilline’s election to Congress it turned out the city had a $110 million deficit. The 30-second ad says the Democrat mismanaged city finances and then deceived voters so he would win a seat in Congress.
