Cranston police have agreed to return firearms and samurai swords to a Vietnam veteran who had argued they were wrongly seized. The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island announced Friday that the department also agreed to pay $2,500 in damages to Robert Machado. The ACLU sued the department on Machado’s behalf after police refused to return his weapons. Police took Machado’s collection after being called to his home by a friend who thought he was suicidal, the organization said. The suit said Machado told police his friend misunderstood the situation.
