WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Authorities have ended a search for a possible small plane down in upper Narragansett Bay after finding no sign that a crash had occurred.

The Warwick Fire Department says no evidence of a downed plane has been found. An air traffic control tower at T.F. Green Airport saw a radar blip that appeared to be a plane drop off the radar four miles southeast of the airport. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

There was no visual, radio or transponder contact with the possible aircraft, and fishermen and quahoggers (KOH'-hog-erz) in the area and didn’t call in anything.

Fire officials say birds may have created the blip.

The Marine Task Force, which includes boats from several cities and towns, participated in the search along with the U.S. Coast Guard.end of story marker
