PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Many shellfishing areas of Rhode Island are closed due to the aftereffects of superstorm Sandy.

The state Department of Environmental Management says the storm surge and coastal flooding are expected to create poor water quality in several coastal ponds.

Those include Point Judith Pond, Potter Pond, Ninigret Pond, Quonochontaug Pond, and Winnapaug Pond. They closed Tuesday.

The department says they'll remain closed until tests show the water is safe for shellfishing.end of story marker
