PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is honoring the service of veterans with a day of parades and community events held around the state.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) and U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse marched in a Veterans Day parade in North Kingstown on Monday morning. The parade featured a U.S. Army band and members of the local high school Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

Reed, a West Point graduate, later joined students and faculty at Brown University for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Veterans Day fell on Sunday this year but state and local governments observed the holiday on Monday.

Schools and municipal and state offices were closed throughout Rhode Island.end of story marker
