NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — The final members of a Rhode Island National Guard unit deployed to Afghanistan are returning home.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) plans to be on hand as the soldiers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 143rd Infantry Regiment arrive Friday afternoon at the Quonset Air National Guard Base in North Kingstown.
The soldiers are the last of about 100 to return from a year in Afghanistan, where they have been providing security for Provincial Reconstruction Teams across the country.
The company is based at an armory in East Greenwich.
