PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) — A Portsmouth town councilwoman has won re-election by a single vote.

The Newport Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/FdIyx ) that Republican Councilwoman Elizabeth A. Pedro defeated Democratic former Councilman Leonard Katzman, 3,791 to 3,790.

Pedro had a four-vote lead before a recount by the state Board of Elections. She said she was glad she voted.

Katzman congratulated Pedro and wished her well. Katzman, who is chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, noted that Portsmouth Democrats won control of the Town Council.

He said had hoped to serve with his fellow Democrats, but is very satisfied with the results of the Nov. 6 election.
