PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 19th century cottage on the campus of Rhode Island College that was once part of the state orphanage complex has been renovated.

The historic Yellow Cottage has been turned into a space for a classroom, conference rooms, office and a museum featuring exhibits on the building’s history.

The Yellow Cottage was built around 1885 as a dormitory for the State Home and School for Dependent and Neglected Children. Officials say it’s the last original building of the complex that operated from 1885 to 1979. The college initially wanted to use the site as a center to reunite troubled families with children in state custody, but that option fell through because of costs.

The college recently held a ribbon cutting to mark the completion of the project.end of story marker
