PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Providence public school system is holding a seminar on chronic absenteeism in an effort to get parents and families more involved in preventing the problem.

The school department is holding the seminar on Thursday evening at the Parent and Family Resource Center on Washington Street in Providence behind the administration building on Westminster Street.

Officials say chronic absenteeism affects students’ behavior, academic performance and motivation.

Parents are encouraged to attend to learn how schools handle absenteeism, what support is available for students and what parents can do to help.end of story marker
