PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s office is reminding Rhode Islanders that flags may be returned to full-staff after the interment of Sen. Daniel Inouye.
Inouye died Dec. 17 of respiratory complications. His interment was scheduled for Sunday.
President Barack Obama ordered flags on public buildings and grounds nationwide be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for Inouye’s memory.
Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to both houses of Congress and the second-longest serving senator in U.S. history. He was awarded a Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor, for bravery during World War II, including a heroic effort that cost him his right arm.
