CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) — Central Falls has sworn in its first female firefighter, becoming one of the last communities in Rhode Island to welcome women to its fire department.
WLNE-TV reports that Katie Nichols was sworn in on Friday, making her the first female firefighter in the city’s 118-year history.
Central Falls Fire Chief Robert Bradley says his city was one of the last in Rhode Island to add a woman to its ranks.
Providence hired its first female firefighter 22 years ago.
Nichols has been training with her new colleagues for a month and says she looks forward to becoming part of the department.
The Providence Journal reports that the 29-year-old Nichols is a Warwick resident.
