PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence’s mayor is reminding residents they are required to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks after snowstorms.

Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) says owners and occupants are required to clear snow and ice from the sidewalks, drains, hydrants and pedestrian ramps adjacent to their property. The city ordinance says the clearing must be done within the first eight hours of daylight after the end of any snowfall.

Taveras is also reminding residents they are not allowed to shovel snow into the streets after they have been cleared.

Those who do not comply with the city’s snow removal ordinances face fines varying from $25 to $500.

There are different snow removal ordinances in other Rhode Island cities and towns.end of story marker
