NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Three of the historic mansions in Newport are opening a month earlier than last year because of visitor demand.
The Preservation Society of Newport County says The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House will open for tours starting Friday. The society says admissions at the mansions last year were up 11 percent over 2011, the biggest jump ever. Total admissions for the year were 883,000, the highest in a decade.
Two other mansions, Rosecliff and Chateau-sur-Mer, will open on March 16, followed by Green Animals and Kingscote on May 11. Hunter House, Chepstow and Isaac Bell House will open for daily tours in June.
