PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — National Grid is warning customers of a scam that uses the utility’s name.
The utility says scammers have called customers and claimed to be from National Grid. They then demand payment for what they say are past due electric accounts and say service will be cut if they don’t pay immediately by phone.
In some cases, the utility says, the caller has claimed their meter needs to be replaced, and they must pay a large fee.
National Grid says that any customer who receives a suspicious call to contact customer service.
