LINCOLN, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island environmental officials are reporting an increase in the sightings of black bears, especially in the northwest part of the state.
The Department of Environmental Management says it is tracking a 300-pound bear or bears spotted since last Thursday in North Smithfield, Lincoln, Exeter, Burrillville, Scituate and Glocester.
The North Smithfield bear destroyed a bird feeder.
The Department of Environmental Management says it’s not sure if it’s dealing with a single bear or multiple bears.
The department is urging residents to take some common-sense measures to keep bears away, such as keeping garbage inside until trash pickup day and removing bird feeders.
