PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — National Grid is warning its customers in Rhode Island about a scam in which individuals claiming to be with the energy utility call to demand payment for past-due bills.
The utility said Friday that the callers will threaten to shut off a customer’s service unless the customer provides their bank account information.
While National Grid does call customers to notify them about past-due balances, the utility says it never demands immediate payment over the phone. Customers contacted regarding a late bill are given the option of paying by check, credit or debit card.
National Grid asks any customers who believe they were contacted by the scam artists to call immediately.
