Rhode Islanders trying to buy products using a food stamps card would have to present photo ID under legislation filed in the state’s General Assembly. Representative Patricia Morgan announced her legislation Thursday. The West Warwick Republican said requiring people to prove their identity when using the electronic cards used to redeem food stamp benefits would reduce fraud. The requirement would apply to those using electronic benefit cards to redeem other public assistance, too. It would be up to retailers to check the photo ID against the name on the government-issued EBT card.
