Federal appeals judge in Boston named top judge of wiretap court

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A senior judge on the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston has been named chief judge of a secretive federal court that handles appeals over wiretaps of suspected terrorists or spies.

The U.S Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review was created to hear appeals from the government when its applications for wiretap warrants are rejected by a lower court.

Bruce Selya has served on the three-judge court since 2005. The Providence Journal is reporting that Selya will take over as chief judge on May 19. His term runs through 2012.

Selya is from Rhode Island and was a federal judge in the state before being appointed to the Boston-based federal appeals court in 1986.
