PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A court hearing has been delayed for three Narragansett Indians who want a new trial after being convicted of scuffling with state police.

Lawyers for Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas and two other tribe members will ask a Superior Court judge for a new trial during a hearing set for May 12. The hearing had been scheduled for Monday.

Thomas and six other Narragansett defendants were accused of fighting or resisting state police who raided a tribal smoke shop in 2003. The shop wasn't collecting state taxes, and a federal appeals court later ruled it was operating illegally.

Earlier this month, a jury found Thomas guilty of simple assault. Randy Noka was convicted of disorderly conduct and Hiawatha Brown was convicted of both disorderly conduct and simple assault.

Four others were acquitted.
