Senate committee narrowly adopts budget making deep cuts
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A key Senate committee has decided by a thin margin that a budget making deep spending cuts should get a full floor vote.
The Senate Finance Committee voted 7-6 on Wednesday night to adopt the budget proposal. The full Senate plans to vote on the spending plan Thursday afternoon. House lawmakers approved it last week.
The vote was unusually close and came after Senate Democrats held a long, closed-door caucus. Senate President Joseph Montalbano and the Democratic majority leader attended the committee hearing and voted for the budget to make sure it passed.
The budget balances a $168 million deficit for the fiscal year ending in June by making deep cuts in social welfare spending and reducing funding for cities and towns.![]()
