PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island families are changing their lifestyles in an effort to cut living expenses after the limping economy left many with lower incomes.

Some middle class families have transferred children from private to public schools, abandoned eating out in favor of home-cooked meals and shop at discount stores.

The Providence Journal cites the case of Paul and Gloria Martin of Cranston's Eden Park neighborhood who have seen their annual income plummet by about 50 percent to $65,000.

The two accountants have also terminated health club membership and digital cable TV service.

Their 15-year-old son, Kevin, must pay if he gets an urge to eat at McDonald's, together with a $1 gas surcharge if the parents are driving.
