Providence city worker accused of assaulting girlfriend
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Providence city worker has been suspended from his job after the police charged him with assaulting his girlfriend with the wooden stick of a toilet plunger.
Ernesto Figueroa, the city registrar of vital statistics, was one of Mayor David Cicilline's early hires. He's been suspended without pay.
Police say Figueroa's girlfriend, Delia Rodriguez, complained that he slapped and pushed her and struck her several times with the plunger during a fight on Friday morning. Police say Rodriguez declined medical attention.
Figueroa is quoted in the police report as denying the allegations and indicating that Rodriguez hurt herself.
The phone rang unanswered early Thursday morning at the office of Figueroa's lawyer.
Figueroa was arraigned in Providence District Court last week on a charge of felony domestic assault. He did not enter a plea.
