WESTERLY, R.I.—A candidate for the General Assembly says he's quitting politics because of derogatory comments posted about him on a newspaper Web site.

Caswell Cooke Jr., the Westerly town council vice president, had planned to challenge Rep. Peter Lewiss for a House seat. Instead, Cooke says he'll drop out of the race and will leave politics in November, when his council term expires.

Cooke says he was the subject of "nasty, rude and low" remarks on the Web site of the Westerly Sun, which allows readers to comment anonymously on articles. The comments appeared on the Web site after the newspaper ran a May 1 article about the campaign's kickoff event.

He says one post said his girlfriend and her family would be "fair game" during the campaign.
