Brown suspends student for hitting NYT columnist with pie

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Brown University has suspended a student for hitting a New York Times columnist with a cream pie during an Earth Day speech.

Margaree Little was one of two people who heaved green whipped pies at Thomas Friedman at the start of a campus talk because they disagree with his brand of environmentalism.

Little has refused to identify the second student involved. She says she's been banned from Brown's campus for the fall semester, although she can petition to be readmitted in the spring.

Little has faulted Friedman because she believes he supports things like biofuels that reduce the availability of food and displace people in developing nations. Friedman has written about taking a careful approach and ensuring biodiversity in areas where biofuel crops are grown.
