PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Former President George H.W. Bush plans to kick off a fundraising effort at Bryant University and speak at its commencement.

Bush, a former U.S. liaison to China, is scheduled to start Saturday by unveiling a tabletop model of a famous Chinese palace building in Beijing.

Bryant's U.S.-China Institute is trying to raise enough money to build a lifesize replica of the Shu Fang Zhai (SH'-oo F'-ang JAI) hall on its Smithfield campus. Once used by Chinese emperors, the hall is now used to greet VIPs.

If built, it would be the first time the Chinese government has approved the replication of part of the Beijing palace complex outside China.

Later in the morning, Bush will speak at Bryant's commencement and receive an honorary degree.
