PAWTUCKET, R.I.—A new leader takes over at Pawtucket-based Hasbro, the nation's second-largest toy maker.

Brian Goldner became the company's CEO starting Thursday. He previously served as Hasbro's chief operating officer and replaces retiring CEO Alfred Verrecchia.

In an interview, Goldner said he views Hasbro as more than a toy company.

With a trove of well-known brands such as Monopoly, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Littlest Pet Shop and Playskool, Goldner said it's essential that Hasbro think beyond its traditional business and across all platforms.

He says working with Hollywood is a big part of his vision. For example, last year's "Transformers" movie, based on the Hasbro toy line, took in more than $700 million worldwide and helped revive the toy brand.
