Providence opening cooling centers during heat spell
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—With temperatures soaring, Providence emergency officials are urging residents to stay cool and check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives.
Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is predicting that air quality will reach unhealthy levels especially in western and southern Rhode Island on Monday.
Providence is offering emergency shelter from the heat Sunday at the Springfield Middle School. On Monday and Tuesday, the cooling center will at the Da Vinci Center on Charles Street.
The city says the local public libraries and senior centers are also prepared for extra visitors looking to escape the dangerous heat.
Providence Emergency Agency Director Peter Gaynor also urged residents to check up on elderly neighbors and relatives during the heat wave.![]()
