Man pleads guilty to failing to register as a sex offender
PROVIDENCE, R.I. --A former Massachusetts man has pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender after moving to Rhode Island, in what federal prosecutors say is the first conviction in the state under a 2-year-old federal law that requires such registration.
Michael DiTomasso pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Providence. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison when he's sentenced on Oct. 24.
Prosecutors say DiTomasso pleaded guilty in Worcester in 1995 to rape and abuse of a child under 16 and indecent assault of a child under 14.
He moved in March 2007 from Milford, Mass., to Woonsocket. Prosecutors say he failed to register as a sex offender despite living blocks from the city's police station.
