PROVIDENCE, R.I.—House lawmakers have passed a bill that cracks down on underage drinking.

Under the bill, teens under 21 who try to buy alcohol would lose their drivers' licenses for 30 days. A second offense carries a 90-day suspension, and subsequent offenses result in year-long suspensions.

The House approved the bill 63-3 on Thursday and sent it to the Senate.

The legislation would also impose fines of up to $500 as a first offense for people who make or distribute fake IDs.

The bill follows two alcohol-related deaths of Barrington teenagers in the last year
