PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The state Board of Elections has postponed voting on a proposed rule that would not count the votes of people who show up at the wrong polling place on Election Day.

The board on Thursday put off a vote on the plan until after the November election.

The American Civil Liberties Union had opposed the change because it said people who cast a ballot at the wrong polling place will not have any of their votes counted.

Under current rules, people who show up at the wrong precinct can still have their votes for federal office counted.
