PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The state's public buses are getting technology upgrades under new federal funding announced by Sen. Jack Reed.

Reed announced more than $1.3 million in federal funding Monday for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority. The money will be used to add more sophisticated technology to the state's 240 fixed-route buses through a project called Intelligent Transportation System.

The buses will have global-positioning systems, schedule adherence monitoring and other upgrades.

RIPTA general manager Al Moscola says the funding will allow RIPTA buses to move into the 21st century.
