PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader has submitted more than 2,000 signatures in his bid for a place on the ballot in Rhode Island.

Nader spokesman Toby Heaps said campaign volunteers submitted 2,047 signatures to election officials in 19 cities and towns on Monday. Under state law, a candidate must submit signatures from 1,000 registered voters.

Election officials must still analyze the signatures to make sure they are valid.

Nader, a longtime consumer advocate, sought the White House in each of the last three presidential elections. He ran on the Green Party ticket in 1996 and 2000, and as an independent in 2004.

His running mate is Matt Gonzalez, a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
