PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island's Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is praising Barack Obama's choice of Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his running mate.

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations.

Whitehouse on Saturday described Biden as a competent leader, straight talker, and widely respected expert in foreign policy who has never forgotten his roots in Pennsylvania.

Whitehouse says both Obama and Biden understand the tough challenges that face American families at home and America's standing and reputation in the world.

Biden's three decades in the Senate give him more than ten years seniority over Republican candidate John McCain. Biden chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
