Democrat Barack Obama holds a 20-point lead over Republican John McCain among Rhode Island voters as Democrats gather in Denver for the party's nominating convention. The poll gave Obama 50 percent of registered voters to McCain's 30 with 20 percent undecided. The poll was conducted before Obama selected Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate. About 57 percent of respondents who supported Sen. Hillary Clinton in the primary said they planned to vote for Obama in the general election, while 23 percent of respondents who voted for Clinton said they were supporting McCain. When asked to choose between a candidate who was more experienced or one who would bring change to current policies, 58 percent said they wanted someone who would deliver change while 29 percent said they preferred a more experienced and tested leader.

The Brown University poll was conducted from Aug. 18-20, and included interviews with 548 registered voters in Rhode Island. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.
