WESTERLY, R.I.—A Westerly based bank has notified about 1,000 holders of bank-issued debit and credit cards that their accounts may have been compromised.

Michael Rauh, executive vice president of Washington Trust Company, says the affected customers received a letter last week informing them of the situation.

He said the bank was notified by MasterCard that an unspecified breach had compromised certain accounts.

The letter says affected card holders will receive new cards with new numbers in seven to 10 business days. The compromised cards will be deactivated Sept. 8.

The letter also says Washington Trust customers will not be held liable for unauthorized use of their cards.
