EAST GREENWICH, R.I.—A former assistant at an East Greenwich nursing home has been indicted on two counts of rape for allegedly assaulting a patient with Alzheimer's disease.

A grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging 24-year-old Matthew Doyle with first-degree sexual assault.

Authorities accuse Doyle of assaulting a 69-year-old woman last month. A spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Lynch said Doyle has been fired from his job at St. Elizabeth's Home.

Doyle was ordered held without bail after his arrest. He's will be arraigned in Kent County Superior Court on Sept. 19.

Defense attorney Paul DiMaio said investigators have no witnesses or physical evidence linking Doyle to an assault. DiMaio said Doyle has never been arrested or faced criminal charges before.
