PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Providence man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting a friend during an argument over a cell phone.

Kelvyn Ramirez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and one count of carrying a pistol without a license as part of a plea deal.

Attorney General Patrick Lynch said the accessibility of guns turned a quarrel between friends into a tragedy.

Prosecutors said Ramirez and victim Aneuris Caceres were drinking in May 2007 at a South Providence house when they had a fistfight over a cell phone. They kept quarreling as the day wore on, then left the area to get guns.

Prosecutors said Caceres returned with a handgun and a sawed-off shotgun and Ramirez had a handgun. Authorities said Caceres fired first but Ramirez repeatedly shot the victim.
