PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A teenager burned in a Providence house fire earlier this week has died of her injuries.

Hospital officials say 17-year-old Edith Vargas, a senior at Feinstein High School, died early Wednesday morning.

Fire officials think a candle caused the Tuesday morning fire that left Vargas with burns over 85 percent of her body, including some third-degree burns. Providence Fire Marshal Anthony DiGuilio says the blaze started it the girl's bedroom when the candle ignited bedding. She was probably asleep at the time.

Seven other people in the home escaped unhurt.
