PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island is marking the 70th anniversary this weekend of the catastrophic 1938 hurricane, the worst storm to ever hit the state.

Gov. Don Carcieri and representatives of the National Weather Service are commemorating the event Friday morning at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence.

Special ribbons will be placed on street signs and telephone poles to mark the height of the flood waters.

The hurricane hit Rhode Island on Sept. 21, 1938. It decimated neighborhoods in southern Rhode Island, flooded downtown Providence and killed several hundred people in the state and around New England.
