EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A convicted thief has died while trying to steal a flat-screen television from an East Providence apartment complex.

The man was taking the expensive television set from the lobby of a complex on East Shore Circle when he died on Monday morning. His name has not been released.

East Providence police Capt. Walter Barlow said the man had pulled the 75-pound television off the wall, cut the cable, carried it outside and propped it against a wall.

He started his car, but collapsed before he could drive off with his loot. The car was still running when police found him dead.

Barlow said the man, who was previously convicted of shoplifting and robbery, had multiple health problems and likely died from natural causes.
