PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island is trying to sell off a piece of waterfront property on the capital city's waterfront to pay for the next phase of the I-Way project.

Department of Transportation officials got the green light Tuesday to sell the land, where a large, unused former nightclub building stands.

The state bought the parcel for $4.7 million in 2000 through eminent domain to make way for the relocation of Interstate 195. It is currently valued at about $3.5 million.

Residents and some local officials have balked, asking that the sale be postponed so they could examine using the area for public space.
