RI lawmakers approve open records bill, with catch

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Rhode Island House has approved legislation that would expand access to public records.
But the lawmakers, in a 46-22 vote on Tuesday, eliminated a requirement that initial police narrative reports on arrests be made public. Proponents say it's a key piece of the bill, showing insight into why an arrest was made.
Gov. Don Carcieri and Attorney General Patrick Lynch oppose the bill, saying it would authorize releasing information that could identify crime victims and compromise public safety.
The legislation would raise fines for police departments that refuse to release information and require police to release basic arrest information within 24 hours.
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Edith Ajello, has asked that it not be sent to the Senate so amendments to the bill could be changed.![]()
