RI House panel endorses police deadly force bill
PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The names of police officers who use deadly force on the job would not be released until after a grand jury has reviewed the case under legislation endorsed by a House committee.
The House Judiciary Committee approved the measure Thursday. It will now be taken up by the full House.
Rep. Donald Lally, the chairman of the committee, tells The Providence Journal that the committee was influenced by police officers who described the stress of having their names made public after deadly force incidents.
The Rhode Island branch of the American Civil Liberties Union opposes the measure, saying there's no reason to keep the information secret.
